Associations and volunteers

Folkhälsan is an active civil society organisation with 19,000 members. We have around 100 local associations, which engage in health-promoting, non-profit activities. Most local associations organize swimming schools and Mayflower fundraisers. Other local association activities can include a wide range of subjects from children’s activities and organized physical exercise to care for the elderly or support for carers. The majority of Folkhälsan activities are organized in Swedish.

We at Folkhälsan have noticed an increase in both the need for volunteering and the interest in them – among older age groups as well as young people. Folkhälsan offers a wide range of opportunities to be active, and we are best known for our local associations in various parts of the country. There are differences between associations, but most of them organize swimming schools as well as activities for children and families.

You can volunteer even if you’re not a member of an association, particularly if you wish to be part of a network dedicated to a specific task.

“The common factor is the effort to promote health. The associations are experts in their local circumstances and know the relevant, everyday issues in their area.” – Viveca Hagmark, Director, Folkhälsans förbund

Work that promotes health, life quality and communality is considered meaningful. Folkhälsan’s slogan “everybody feels better if everybody feels well” is confirmed by research showing that differences between member’s health and well-being are lowest in communities where everyone’s health is good. There is a connection between health and volunteer work as well – being active contributes to well-being.

Motivation and interest in volunteer work remain constant. We have a need to do something meaningful, make a difference, help others, be a part of a community, learn, gain experiences and make friends, improve our own health and that of the others. Many people who have or have had difficulties themselves now wish to offer their support to others who face a similar situation.
