RADIEL is a lifestyle intervention study aiming at prevention of gestational diabetes (GDM) in high risk women
Gestational diabetes (GDM) is an important risk factor for future type 2 diabetes. As pregnant women are usually amenable to changes that positively contribute to the well-being of their offspring, pregnancy could be a favorable time for lifestyle intervention and prevention of future diabetes. The main aim was to assess the efficacy of a diet and exercise intervention program in women at high diabetes risk.
The RADIEL is a multicenter randomized controlled intervention study targeting women at high risk for GDM. The original study was conducted between 2008 and 2014 in all three maternity hospitals of the Helsinki metropolitan area and in the South-Karelia Central Hospital in Lappeenranta, in Finland. Eligible participants for the study were women aged 18 years, pregnant at, 20 weeks of gestation, with a history of GDM and/or a prepregnancy BMI of 30 kg/m2. Exclusion criteria were type 1 or type 2 diabetes, or GDM diagnosed before 20 weeks of gestation; use of medication that influences glucose metabolism, such as use of oral corticosteroids or metformin; multiple pregnancy; physical disability; current substance abuse; severe psychiatric disorder; and significant difficulty in cooperating.
Study subjects were randomized to an intervention or a control arm. The intervention group received structured diet and exercise counseling while the control group receives standard advice. Multiple anthropometric and laboratory measures were assessed every 3 months until 1 year postpartum. Laboratory measures include a 75 g 2h oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), upon which the diagnosis of GDM was based.
This study aimed to find the effects of the intervention on the child’s and mother’s long term health, 4-6 years after giving birth and participating in the first part of the study. The 5-year follow-up visits took part in 2013-2017.
