Data engineer position at Folkhälsan Research Center at Biomedicum Helsinki

We are looking for a talented data engineer to support our team and lead data management initiatives in the research group. We have been routinely collecting a large variety of data for over 27 years and those data are important assets requiring careful curation. Our database consists of versatile longitudinal data on clinical examinations, health data, and biological samples. We are now searching for a data engineer to design a new database environment, improve the usability of the data and undertake a database system’s transfer. The data engineer will work as a part of multidisciplinary research group. 

The position is made available in the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy (FinnDiane) study group (www.finndiane.fi). With nearly 10,000 participants, FinnDiane is one of the world’s largest study on type 1 diabetes and its long-term complications. Our main aim is to identify genetic and environmental risk factors for diabetic complications, and ultimately, to improve the quality of life of individuals with diabetes. FinnDiane is based at the Folkhälsan Research Center, an international research institute. We are closely collaborating with the University of Helsinki and Helsinki University Hospital at the Meilahti Campus area. We work with top researchers and research institutes in the world to improve health and well-being on a global scale.

Job description

The primary responsibilities of the position include:

  • Designing, improving and planning the data structure in the new database environment in collaboration with the research team
  • Exporting and storing data from the previous database environment
  • Creating and uploading the data structures and the data to the new environment
  • Creating calculated fields
  • Introducing the new database and its functionalities to the research group

Qualification and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, IT or equivalent or previous experience in data management.
  • Database skills: Understanding of database theory and experiences with database setup and design
  • Capability to work effortlessly in Windows, and Linux environment.
  • Experience with coding/ scripting in SQL, R or similar
  • Solution-seeking, systematic, and responsible way of working
  • Prudent attention to detail
  • Working with tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively, fluent in spoken and written English. Our team is international so Finnish/Swedish skills are not required.
  • Knowledge of biology/ genetics/ heath sciences is a plus

Salary and contract

  • The contract will be offered for 6 months, with possibility to a part-time contract if preferred. The position is available immediately.
  • Folkhälsan Research Center follows the collective agreement for the private social services sector. The salary will be based on previous qualifications, experience and performance in the position. The position is located at Haartmaninkatu 8, Helsinki.
